Sargent Elementary School Medication Policy

MEDICATION etc. AND THE SCHOOL

By New York State Education Law, the school is responsible only for First Aid care of school children who are injured or become ill while under school supervision following which, the child is to be placed under the care of his parents or guardians, upon whom rests the responsibility for subsequent treatment. Under certain unusual circumstances, when it is necessary for a child to have medication, the Nurse may cooperate with the physician and the parents, but certain definite requirements must be met.

If it becomes necessary for your child to have medication in school, please call the Nurse well in advance.

REGULATIONS CONCERNING MEDICATION IN SCHOOL

Please note: All of the following regulations must be met before any medication can be given.
  1. The Nurse must have a written order signed by the doctor or nurse practioner giving the following information:
    1. Name of Medication
    2. Reason for giving
    3. Dosage
    4. Time to given
    5. Number of days to be given
  2. It must have a professional label (either a drug store or drug proprietary)
  3. It must be brought to the Health Office by an Adult. Under no circumstances is a child to bring medication to school !
  4. The parent or guardian must submit a written request to the Nurse to give the medication as directed.
It will be the responsibility of the parent or guardian to come to the Health Office to obtain any unused medication. . If the unused medication has been picked up, it will be discarded seven (7) days after day of final dosage. Medication that has been prescribed for a period extending to the end of the school year will be discarded the last day in June if it has not been picked up by the parent or guardian.

NEW PRESCRIPTIONS ARE REQUIRED AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH SCHOOL YEAR IN SEPTEMBER.
