Educational Programs

Power School is a web-based student management system that will provide timely data to the District, mandated information to the State Education Department, and ongoing progress to parents in a secure environment. Power School features make it possible to produce schedules, generate attendance, grade checks, report cards, and transcripts in the district in a timely and cost effective way.

Reading Instruction is a routine part of the day for children. Whether it is learning to read or reading to learn, a primary focus of reading instruction in the Beacon City School District is through the Guided Reading process in grades K-6. The purpose of guided reading is to meet the varying instructional needs of all students in each class, while enabling them to greatly expand their reading powers.

Destination Reading is a comprehensive PreK-3 electronically-based reading curriculum that focuses on emergent and beginning readers and writers. It also supports readers and writers in improving their fluency, comprehension and effectively strengthening their overall language and communication skills. All four elementary schools will be working with this program to strengthen and enhance our present reading programs.

Destination Math is aninteractive math program that teaches basic skills, math reasoning, problem solving, and pre-algebra in real-life contexts for grades 6-8. This program supports and strengthens our present math program and the requirements of the new NYS Math Standards.

Rivers and Estuary Grant
The Sargent Elementary School will participate in a number of environmental lessons and field trips due to a $5,000 grant awarded to Mrs. Donna Gaynor, Principal of the Sargent School. Be sure to look for more about this project on the Sargent School website.

Green Teen Community Gardening Program--Students in our Beacon Academy and fourth graders in our four Elementary Schools will participate in a collaboration grant with the Cornell Cooperative Extension Dutchess County's Family and Consumer Services program. Students will design, plant, maintain and harvest their own community gardens. Constructive activities will include: growing, harvesting, eating, cooking, and donating. This wonderful project will support the Learning Standards in the areas of health and science.

Shakespeare Festival--The Tempest is coming to the Beacon High School English classes this Fall. This is a unique opportunity for our students to experience a performance of the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival. In addition to reading The Tempest, an interactive classroom workshop will be offered to prepare students for the performance.
